Caravan and Camping Holidays
Caravanning and Camping in the UK is more popular with British holidaymakers than going to Spain. According to a UK Tourism Survey, in 2009 we enjoyed 18million camping and caravanning trips in this country, compared to 10million visits to Spain.
Caravan and Camping Statistics
Of those 18million trips, 44% were spent in static caravans, 30% under canvas and 26% in touring caravans or motor homes.
With 77 million bed nights being spent in caravans, motor homes or tents, this important accommodation sector is second only to hotels. And it’s bigger than the B&B, guesthouse and built self-catering sectors combined.
According to Mintel, one in five people has taken a camping or caravanning holiday in the last three years.
The statistics for the camping and caravanning sector are impressive and seem to demonstrate that this type of holiday is becoming more and more popular with British people. And it’s not simply economic.
There appears to be a growing feeling that camping and caravanning sites offer a genuine get-away-from-it-all experience for holidaymakers. There’s a simplicity about it that makes it possible for friends and families to enjoy more quality time together.
Indeed, young families joining the Camping and Caravanning Club (CCC) now account for almost 50% of new annual memberships.
Increasing Popularity
The increase in popularity of such sites can also be partly attributed to the continual improvement in facilities and amenities as holidaymakers become accustomed to higher standards within the tourism sector generally. Investment by existing camping and caravanning site owners and the development of new sites has further stimulated the market.
So too have efforts by membership organisations like the CCC and the Caravan Club to raise the profile of the sector.
The CCC was founded in 1901, making it the oldest organisation in the world for all forms of camping. It boasts more than 500,000 members and provides over 100 campsites across the UK.
The Caravan Club, formed in 1907, offers a choice of about 200 club sites, plus another 2,500 certified locations. Membership stands at 388,000 families, representing about a million caravanners, motor caravanners and trailer tent owners.
