XXX Domain Names
They Want You To Pay NOT to have one!
The new .xxx domain name will be up and running at the end of the Autumn, and brings a completely new twist to everyone with a website - they want you to pay NOT to have one!
The stated plan for these domains is that porn websites will be easily identifiable simply by the fact they have a .xxx as part of the domain name, making avoiding them - or indeed finding them - much easier.
Porno fans will be delighted to hear that McAfee plans to scan all the .xxx sites daily to ensure that none of them have virus or malware. Safe sex indeed.
I Wish I'd Thought of This
Despite the fact that the porn website market is gigantic, the purveyors of the .xxx suffix are not satisfied with the potential number of folks that will want to register their smutty sites appropriately.
Some bright spark has come up with the idea that website owners should pay to go on a register of website names that do NOT want a .xxx domain. How cool is that, eh? AND it will cost over a hundred quid to go on the list.....
The blurb basically suggests that established brands will want to ensure no-one comes along and registers www.mybrand.xxx thus tarnishing their reputation for ever. Or at least until the lawyers get involved, anyway.
Perhaps these guys have never heard of existing laws that expressly prohibit 'pirates' from passing off as something they're not. The days of cybersquatting are long gone.
Gosh, What Should I Do?
If you're a big friendly household-name brand you will probably join the 'no xxx' list. You don't need the potential aggro and you can easily afford it anyway.
If you're an 'edgy' almost-household-name brand you'll probably register it yourself, make a pathetically tame sub-porn website and aim to get the Daily Mail all excited, thus gaining loads of cheap publicity.
If you're an independent company you'll do well to avoid all the fuss.
Beware of The Con Merchants
Before long all website owners will be getting yet more crappy emails and phone calls designed to scare the uninitiated into parting with their cash.
You've probably heard the patter before, along the lines of "This is Super-Duper Domains here, we've got a drooling pornographer saying he wants to register www.yourwebsite.xxx - BUT give us your money and we'll tell him to clear off".
They'll almost certainly promise that you'll be number one on google as a bonus.
Don't be fooled. Tell them to XXX off.
Love and Kisses.
