Thursday 15th March 2007 Finding sponsors in the sand

Sponsors may be needed if Great Yarmouth's sand sculpture festival is to return to the resort for a second summer. The Ancient Greece-themed festival last year won praise from visitors and encouraged local businesses by attracting more tourists.to the town. But Dutch organiser Sculpture Events said the festival was well short of its target of 200,000 visitors and was left about £180,000 out of pocket. Thomas van den Dungen, the firm's managing-director, said they hoped to find about £50,000 in sponsorship to return this summer. Sponsors could well have a role in helping decide a theme for the next festival. Mr van den Dungen said the £1m cost of the inaugural event would be reduced because they still had the sand stored on the beach and they would therefore not be faced with such a high visitor number target.
