Apprentices show their skills
Tuesday 6th December 2011Apprentices from CLS Offshore in Great Yarmouth took second place in a contest featuring some of the top young engineering talents from leading UK companies.
Teams of four had to design and build a mini drag-racer from a range of waste household plastics, batteries and small motors and then race their powered vehicles over two metres.
The CLS team of Danny King, Olly Penfold, James Partridge and Harley Coleman took second place in the IMechE (Institute of Mechanical Engineers) Challenge at the Imperial War Museum Duxford.
“It was a remarkable achievement against nationally renowned companies such as Ford, Lotus Engineering, Nissan and Britvic,” said Sid Anverali, financial director of CLS Offshore, an energy sector service company. “Our apprentices were up against 14 teams, many with specialist skills, and had only two hours to design and build their racer which then had to travel two metres in the quickest time possible while carrying increasingly heavy weights. We’re proud of their success which underlines the quality of young people we are developing for the offshore industry in this area.”
A team from Felixstowe Ports won the overall prize which was presented by Andrew Lansley, MP for South Cambridgeshire and Secretary of State for Health.
“Engineering is one of Britain’s most important industries, and it was heartening to see our next generation of engineers taking to the challenge with such innovation and enthusiasm,” he said.
