Cranes give real lift to harbour project
Monday 16th March 2009Giant gantry cranes to be used for the container terminal at the new outer harbour are due to arrive on May 1.
The barge carrying them will be the first vessel to dock in the port, a symbol of the completion of a key stage of the EastPort UK project.
The container terminal is expected to begin operating on July 1.
It will cater for both the short sea trade bringing vessels from Dutch, Belgian and German ports and mid sea trade from destinations as far away as the Caribbean, South Africa and the east Mediterranean.
A further two cranes are likely to be added in a second phase of the terminal.
Yarmouth borough council deputy leader Barry Stone said that the arrival of the first ship at the new harbour would be one of the best things to happen for Yarmouth in many years.
