Danger fear at church

Wednesday 8th August 2012

St Luke’s Church in Cobholm has been closed because of fears for the safety of the congregation.

The move follows an electrical survey that raised areas of concern which persuaded the parochial church council to temporarily shut down the premises.

Not enough money is available to the church at the moment to carry out the necessary repairs, expected to cost about £20,000.

Another £80,000 is needed for other repairs to the church over the coming years.

Team Rector, the Rev Chris Terry, said it was sad to have to take such drastic action at a church with a small friendly congregation. But the state of the electrics was very poor and there was the risk of someone being seriously injured. He urged people to use Great Yarmouth Minster instead, which was the local parish church.
