Debut day for outer harbour
Tuesday 16th December 2008Great Yarmouths new outer harbour could welcome its first vessel as early as February.
The first 400m of quay in the £50m development is nearing completion and a further section will be made ready in stages throughout next year.
Two large cranes are expected to arrive in April enabling the container terminal to open at the start of July.
Eddie Freeman, chief executive of operator EastPort UK, has also confirmed that the company has agreed to buy a 10-acre site for an administrative block close to the port.
More than 30 staff will be move into offices at the former Omni-Pac egg carton factory on South Denes early next year with Eastports current quayside headquarters being put on the market.
Mr Freeman said talks with an offshore company meant it was likely that the harbour would be brought into use in February a month ahead of schedule - for a job requiring a ship too big for the river port.
