Giant leap for new harbour
Wednesday 22nd April 2009Great Yarmouths outer harbour is set to start in a big way with a massive crane-carrying vessel being the first to dock there at the end of the month.
The ship is on its way from China, via Hong Kong and around the Cape of Good Hope, and likely to arrive around April 26.
It will dock a few days later to unload two giant cranes which will be used in EastPort UKs new container terminal.
The harbour is expected to begin trading commercially in July when larger vessels servicing the offshore industry start using it.
Eddie Freeman, chief executive of EastPort UK, paid tribute to the efforts of everyone involved to get the harbour completed.
He said they were still talking to potential users of the container facilities but would have to be patient as the global business had dropped by at least 20% in the recession.
