Massive windfarm will bring jobs

Tuesday 5th January 2010
Great Yarmouth could enjoy enormous economic benefits if plans are confirmed to build the world’s second largest offshore windfarm off its coast.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown is due to give Government approval to a series of offshore windfarms which would include the £15bn project off Norfolk.

It is expected to have at least 1,000 turbines, compared to 30 at the existing Scroby Sands windfarm off Yarmouth.

John Best, chief executive of the East of England Energy Group (Eeegr), said the project offered a tremendous opportunity for companies in the region to cash in on a burgeoning industry.

There was a unique opportunity to make the East of England the home of renewable energy with the region also well placed to profit from other planned windfarms off the east coast.

Philip Watkins, chief executive of 1st East, the urban regeneration company (URC) for Yarmouth and Lowestoft, said both towns would enjoy economic benefits from the development.

PowerPark in Lowestoft is already established as a hub for energy industries involved in developing the Greater Gabbard windfarm off the Suffolk coast.

Mr Watkins said that nearly 1,000 direct jobs and another 4,000 supply chain jobs could be created in the area for the operation and maintenance element of windfarms.
