Great Yarmouth Market Place and Gorleston Harbour

New river crossing for Yarmouth approved

Tuesday 8th December 2009
A dual carriageway lifting bridge costing up to £122m will become the third river crossing for Great Yarmouth.

The scheme has won the approval of Norfolk County Council although it may be several years before money is available to build it.

But people living in properties affected by the proposed construction – between Queen Anne’s Road and Southtown Road – can now be compensated if they cannot sell their homes.

The bridge pver the River Yare is needed to ease congestion on the town’s two other crossings and improve links to the Outer Harbour.

It will also help Yarmouth cope with an extra 12,000 people and new businesses expected to move into the area in the next 20 years.

Councillors rejected the option of a tunnel from Ballast Quay to the Harfreys roundabout which would cost an estimated £376m.
