Power Cut Plunges Seafront Into Darkness

Thursday 4th August 2011

Great Yarmouth seafront and a huge swathe of the East Coast was plunged into darkness at 9.50 pm last night following a power surge apparently caused by lightning.

A Norwich City football friendly was halted as the Carrow Road lights failed. Crowds of holidaymakers who had gathered to watch a fireworks display wandered helplessly on Great Yarmouth seafront. Traffic lights ceased to function in Gorleston. Candles were lit in villages.

Power was restored by engineers from EDF Energy just after 10.30pm.
