Rig's visit proves boost for local trade
Friday 21st January 2011A massive jack-up gas rig has moored at EastPort UKs outer harbour for a major refurbishment which should boost the local economy.
An estimated £3m worth of contracts for work on the rig have gone to local companies, many drawing on existing skills and resources in the area.
The ports chief executive Eddie Freeman was delighted that the Geneva-based Noble Corporation, one of the worlds largest offshore drilling contractors, had chosen Yarmouth for the work.
It reinforced the value of the outer harbour and underlined Yarmouths position as Englands number one offshore energy support port.
Mr Freeman said the facilities and flexibility offered by the outer harbour meant that recommissioning, decommissioning and renewable energy activities in the southern North Sea could all be supported.
Local companies contracted for the refurbishment include those involved in fabrication, drilling, tubular maintenance, lifeboat overhaul and repair, non-destructive testing, freight forwarding and storage.
