Simon fired up for big challenge
Monday 27th October 2008Great Yarmouth fireman Simon Brierley will be out to prove how super fit he is in a world championship next year.
But the real object of his exercise will be to raise as much money as possible for the Genetic Research Team, in Cambridge, and The Fire Fighters Charity.
The 29-year-old is taking part in the World Fire Fighter Ironman Championship in Germany, a challenge which embraces swimming 3.8km, cycling 180km and running 42km.
All the time, however, his mind will be on one-year-old son Joel who was diagnosed with genetic disease Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome (BWS) at birth.
Simon said that when the syndrome was first diagnosed they had no idea what sort of help or support was available for Joel.
They were put in touch with the BWS Support Group and referred to a paediatrician at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and were overwhelmed with the response.
Now he hopes to help repay that support by raising money for the cause and enabling charities to continue their invaluable work in supporting families like his.
