Pool must remain closed
Friday 4th April 2008There is to be no quick fix for Great Yarmouth's only public swimming pool which is destined to stay closed for at least three more weeks. The longer closure will allow the complete range of repairs to be carried out in one go. The pool has already been closed for around three weeks, and throughout the Easter school holidays, following damage caused by gales. Simon Mutten, environmental services manager for the borough council, said the bill for the work would probably run into the tens of thousands of pounds. He said the building was 28 years old and, although it was unfortunate that the damage happened when it did, much of the work would have been needed at some point. Marina Centre manager Wayne Nixon said that although lost revenue could be claimed back through insurance, he was concerned that regular users would be tempted elsewhere, possibly to pools in Norwich and Sheringham, and stay with them in the long term. But he hoped the effects of the closure would underline the pool's importance as a recreational facility, helping to seal its future.
