Safer course for motobility drivers

Elderly and disabled drivers of motobility scooters were given special advice in Great Yarmouth on how to control them safely.

Police made the move after accidents and near misses involving the scooters.

A course was laid out at the town's Marina Centre for drivers to test their skills and experts answered questions on safety issues, maintenance and driving practices.

Norfolk police traffic manager, David Law, said there was no requirement for the scooter owners to have taken a driving test and no requirement by law to have road tax or insurance although it was advisable to have third party insurance.

The event, organised by Norfolk police, was the first of its kind in the region and originated from north Yarmouth safer neighbourhood team after other road users raised concerns.
