Beware the dodgy operators
Families in Great Yarmouth are urged to be on the lookout for dodgy operators who take money for removing rubbish and waste and then flytip it nearby.
The men often ask only a few pounds for removing small quantities of rubbish but also offer full garden or house clearances.
In a number of recent cases, the rubbish has then been flytipped - sometimes within view of the person's home.
Paul Shucksmith, the borough council's senior environmental ranger, said there were regulations which mean householders must ensure that anyone taking waste from their homes is properly licensed.
He warned that unlicensed operators could leave customers facing a court appearance and a fine of up to £5,000.
The council has advised householders to:
- Check if the person removing the waste is registered and ask to see a waste carrier licence
- If they produce the document or only have a licence number, call the Environment Agency on 08708 506506 and request an instant Waste Carrier Validation Check or check online at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/publicregister
- Keep a record of the details of the company and the registration plate of the vehicle used to remove the waste
- If you have any doubts about the service offered pass details on to the Council on 01493 846478 or the Environment Agency on 08708 506506.
