Road closure a major step for outer harbour

There was another significant milestone for Great Yarmouth's £80m outer harbour when the road round South Denes was finally closed to public traffic.

No entry signs have been put up near the power station on the seafront side of the land with traffic being directed to turn right off South Beach Parade into Hartmann Road.

On the river side, South Denes Road was closed at the harbour mouth with drivers having to use the new turning circle there.

It brings to an end an era of motorists taking a leisurely drive round the peninsula to enjoy the sea, river and dockside views.

But it is also a build-up to the arrival of the first container vessel to the outer harbour, expected shortly.

Graham Plant, the borough council's cabinet member for regeneration, said that although some residents were concerned about the loss of the public road it was part of a positive story for Norfolk and Yarmouth itself.

He said the council would be putting a welcome mat out for companies engaged in energy-related industries as they saw a big future for the town in gas field and windfarm maintenance.
