Cabbies to help drive tourist initiative

Great Yarmouth’s 600-strong fleet of taxi drivers could become a driving force in promoting the town’s tourism.

The aim would be to encourage them to become mobile tourist information centres and to ‘talk up’ some of the forthcoming attractions to visitors.

The idea of taxi driving ambassadors is being championed by the tourist group and borough tourism officer Alan Carr said they hoped it would give positive vibes to people staying in the town.

Some drivers already did it but others probably did not have sufficient information, something the group would have to tackle, possibly through a regular newsletter.

There might be an added incentive for drivers to take part, possibly with free tickets to attractions or a driver-of-the-month award.

Early responses from local taxi firms have been encouraging.

Now the tourist group will look at ways drivers could be primed on local attractions and regeneration projects and even given literature to hand out.
