New move to smarten railway station

Friday 5th March 2010
Railway chiefs have promised to help the campaign to smarten up Great Yarmouth station.

Train operator National Express East Anglia said it had various improvements in the pipeline including better signs, some plants and flowers, a new queuing system and an evening information board.

The company's area manager James Steward said they also planned to clean up bird droppings on the concourse but warned there was a limit to what could be done to improve the appearance of a traditional old station.

Local businessman Spencer McCormack is committed to enhancing the 1960s’ terminus and said he had received many pledges of support since a rallying call in the Great Yarmouth Mercury.

SPP Digital, Asda, Haven Holidays and Anglia Skills Academy have all said they would like to help out.

A Fix Great Yarmouth Station Campaign, spearheaded by prospective Conservative candidate for Yarmouth Brandon Lewis has attracted some 3,000 supporters since launching in January.
