Work starts on cultural quarter

Friday 12th November 2010
Work begins next week on converting St George’s Chapel into an arts centre as part of a new cultural quarter for Great Yarmouth.

The project, which includes a new pavilion, should be completed by December 2011 with the multi-purpose venue which seats about 300 people opening to the public in early 2012.

RG Carter is carrying out the works on the Borough Council-led project, working closely with English Heritage and Hopkins Architects.

It will breathe new life into the grade one listed chapel and the surrounding area of King Street.

Outside the chapel, a pavilion will be built on the pedestrianised St George’s Plain, housing a café/bar, toilets, and reception facilities for the venue. An outdoor performance area will also be created.

Once work is completed, the buildings will be leased by the council to the St George’s Arts Centre Trust.

The work is being supported by the CABE Seachange programme, the Heritage Lottery Fund, the East of England Development Agency, Norfolk County Council and English Heritage.
